Low-beam and high-beam headlight bulbs should only ever be the wattage the car manufacturer specifies! If you fit higher-wattage bulbs than intended, you'll most likely need to replace the entire headlight before too long. A higher-wattage bulb runs at a higher operating temperature, so the plastic the headlight housings and reflectors are made from simply melts. If your headlights have started shining more dimly than before, try replacing the lens (if that's possible), or polishing it.
