This holds especially true for foreign cars with an automatic transmission. The quality of the oil in an automatic gearbox is a crucial condition for its long service life, and repairing an automatic can cost not much less than buying a new one. So it's not worth the risk of buying substitutes and equivalents of gear oils, risking a counterfeit or an oil whose composition doesn't match.
