unless the carmaker actually calls for it. Many manual gearboxes are sealed for life, meaning the manufacturer only specifies periodic checks of the gear oil level and topping up if it runs low. And you should top up with nothing but the original gear oil, bought from the car brand's official dealer, since no one can guarantee that oils from different makers will mix without trouble.
