Engine oils for passenger cars with diesel and petrol engines built between 1998 and 2002. The requirements are somewhat higher than those of the ACEA A3 and B3 standards.

Oils approved to MB 229.1 are not recommended for use in MB engines built after 2002, namely the petrol M271, M275, M28, and the diesel OM646, OM647 and OM648.
