The history of Castrol
In this section: 5 articles

At the end of the 19th century, 39-year-old entrepreneur Charles Wakefield, who had recently left his post at the American company Vacuum Oil (a direct "ancestor" of Mobil), decided to start his own business in London. In March 1899 he founded a lubricants company, which he named CC Wakefield Co. The company began by researching new technologies for refining oil and making lubricants.
It has to be said that, right up until his death in 1941, Wakefield was the soul and driving force behind Castrol's success. It was he who, back in the 1920s, began shaping marketing policy and advertising strategy, and he succeeded in these areas time and again. And it was Wakefield who kept initiating new scientific research and development, securing a constant technological edge in lubricant manufacturing.
