Packaging board and its properties

Board is the most common and affordable packaging material, offering strong design possibilities and low weight. It's fairly sturdy, which makes it well suited to packaging all kinds of goods — foodstuffs, household chemicals, electronics, medicines, appliances and so on. Despite the widespread use of polymer materials for packaging, board is in no danger of being retired.

Packaging board is a multi-layer construction, where each layer plays its own part so that the end result is a material of the required density and stiffness. It's made from wood pulp, bleached and unbleached cellulose.

There's a classification by area of use for board. Three grades are distinguished: printing, packaging and design board.

Packaging board with an admixture of wood pulp is lighter and has high stiffness. To give it sharp printing properties, a coated finish is applied.

Packaging grades are the ones used to make complex boxes. Besides that, it's an excellent material for making folders, printing greeting cards, calendars and so on.

Packaging boards need to be highly eco-friendly, strong, rigid, with barrier properties and stiffness. Packaging grades are the ones best suited to making complex boxes.

Businesses that use board to package the goods they produce needn't worry. In a field such as transport packaging, it's simply irreplaceable. Russia has seen steady growth in packaging board production (it's popular with foreign manufacturers too).

According to market research, most of the population prefers board over other kinds of packaging materials. Respondents feel it's affordable, easy to use and keeps well. It's also thought that a product packaged in cardboard packaging looks appealing and is easy to spot on store shelves.
