A taximeter is an instrument designed to calculate the cost of a taxi ride. Its main function is to track the distance the car has travelled, measure the ride time and other factors that determine the cost of a taxi trip.

Today the market offers a huge range of these measuring devices, all of which have passed state certification.

Most taximeters perform the following functions:

  • calculating the distance travelled by the car;
  • measuring ride time and idle time;
  • calculating the cost of the ride;
  • generating reports for a given period.

Taximeters connect to a computer so that reports on a shift's work can be pulled, and fiscal reports generated as well. Besides their core functions, a taximeter has additional settings and features that set different taximeters apart from one another.

Taximeters can differ in the following parameters:

  • whether they have a built-in printer for fiscal receipts, or the ability to connect a cash register and printer as external add-on devices;
  • the number of programmable passenger fares, which can range from 3 to 40. A taximeter can be set to automatically switch between evening and daytime rates, as well as prices for in-town and out-of-town trips, switch into standing mode, set a base pickup fee, and choose a fare based on distance or time.
  • a taximeter can track fares separately for up to 4 passengers who get picked up and dropped off at different points;
  • each driver can have an individual code, which matters a lot when the same car is used by several drivers on rotating shifts;
  • a taximeter has a so-called tachograph function that logs speeding during a shift.

A taximeter is mounted on the car's central instrument panel and connected to the car's onboard electrical system. In most cases, a taximeter's operating temperature range runs from -30 to +45..+60 °C. Manufacturers usually provide an 18-month warranty on this type of measuring device. When choosing a taximeter, you need to take all of the above into account: the need to track different fares, the number of drivers, the number of passengers, receipt printing and other relevant criteria. Choosing the right taximeter lets you fully monitor the work of all your taxi drivers and effectively manage your taxi fleet.
