Among the hybrid cars from Japan's Toyota, a new model named the Toyota Prius C Concept is planned for the first half of 2012. The car was shown at the Detroit auto show, and is expected to go into series production. According to the manufacturer's claims, this version will turn out to be the most fuel-efficient of all the previous Prius models. Production of the Prius V, in a minivan body style, is also expected.

Not much is known yet about the car's power figures. But since the Toyota Prius C Concept will be built on the Prius platform, it's most likely reasonable to expect a 1.8-litre petrol engine producing 98 hp, paired with an electric motor capable of 80 hp. And Japanese engineers will likely replace the nickel-metal hydride batteries with lithium ones.

The Toyota Prius C can cover about 40 kilometres on a litre of fuel, with consumption running at 2.6 litres per 100 kilometres. The regular Prius could go 32 kilometres before needing a recharge.

Based on early estimates, the Toyota Prius C's expected market price will land around 1.7 million yen, equivalent to $22,500 (at today's exchange rate).
