Nissan has pulled off a new twist in home power supply. Just a few days ago, the Japanese carmaker unveiled an upgraded Nissan Leaf electric car with a built-in lithium-ion battery. This battery serves as an extra source of electricity for the home.
According to official sources, the lithium-ion battery system stands out for its high level of safety and reliability, as well as its ability to charge quickly. Holding up to 24 kilowatts of energy, the lithium-ion battery can supply power to an average-sized Japanese home. The building where the new system is being tested is located near Nissan's head office.
During testing of the system, named Kan-kan-kyo, the connection to the home power grid is made through a special connector on the electric car. Once connected, the energy stored in the battery starts covering the home's needs. Japanese engineers believe that a system like this is especially relevant given the natural disasters that have been shaking the Land of the Rising Sun lately. Kan-kan-kyo will be able not only to power a home outright, but also simply to make up the shortfall during outages or insufficient supply. The lithium-ion battery will charge at night, or during the day by drawing energy from a solar panel.
