TATA NANO First place, without a shadow of a doubt, goes to the Indian city car, the Tata Nano. It's 3 metres long and 1.5 metres wide. Under the bonnet sits a four-cylinder engine rated at 33 hp. Top speed is 100 km/h. The Tata Nano costs just 2,500 dollars. That's because its trim includes no airbag, no air conditioning, not even a radio. The only thing the Indian engineers can boast is a catalytic converter that cuts emissions.

TATA NANO Second place among the cheapest cars rightfully goes to the four-door Chery with a top speed of 80 km/h. This city car can be had for 4,800 dollars.

The Suzuki Maruti 800, with a 37 hp engine that gets it up to 125 km/h, has won the hearts of many Indians and has claimed third place. At maximum load, this city car uses just 5 litres per 100 km. It costs around 5,000 dollars.

Fourth place can be handed to the Geely HQ SRV, priced at 5,800 dollars. Top speed is 85 km/h. The car is classed as an off-roader. Thanks to features like an adjustable seat and a lavish dashboard, the Chinese engineers have filed it under "luxury". There's also a Geely MR model with a top speed of 145 km/h. Its makers tried to push it onto the American car market, but it was turned away over a poorly thought-out safety system and excessive emissions.

The Chery A1, at 7,400 dollars, has claimed fifth place. The car is fitted with a four-cylinder 1.3-litre petrol engine. It puts out 83 hp. The base trim includes a CD player and air conditioning.

The base trim of the Indian Hyundai i10 is the most complete compared with the city cars described earlier: air conditioning, two airbags, folding rear seats, and electrically assisted power steering. The price of 9,100 dollars is offset by the 1.1-litre petrol engine putting out 68 hp. This model takes sixth place.

And of course we can't overlook the Logan city car from the automaker Renault, which rounds out, in our view, the seven cheapest and most economical cars in the world. Today the Logan is assembled in Russia, India and Romania. This model comes with 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines. Their outputs are, respectively, 75 hp/90 hp, top speed 162/175 km/h, and fuel consumption of 6.8 l/7.2 l per 100 km. Expect to pay around 9,500 dollars for this car.

To wrap up the topic, it's worth pointing out to the car owner that in many developed countries, buying a new car for under 10,000 dollars is practically impossible.
